1. ‘The bracken made their bed’ =  They lacked a lot of their money      
2. ‘Tom’s hand was strong to the plough’ = He was pushing hard to turn all the soil over with the plough
3. ‘But all the beautiful crops soon went / to the mortgage man instead’ = The sold the crops and gave the money to the mortgage
4. ‘Old Tom’s gone light in the head
5. ‘The farm’s still there. Mortgage corporations / couldn’t give it away’  = they couldn't pay because they didn't own the farm eany more
